Abstract
Researching Quranic exegesis involves not only examining how a commentator interprets a verse from the Quran, but also delving into the dialectic involving social, political, cultural, and traditional aspects, as well as considering the readership, all of which become integral to the interpretation of Quranic verses. Buya Hamka is among the Indonesian commentators who integrate these various dimensions. In his Tafsir Al-Azhar, Buya Hamka frequently incorporates elements of local culture when interpreting Quranic verses. This paper aims to discuss the specific aspects of local culture found within Tafsir Al-Azhar, particularly in Surah Al-An'am, through library research. It seeks to investigate the extent to which the use of Minangkabau local culture influences Buya Hamka's interpretations of Quranic verses. After analyzing Tafsir Al-Azhar on Surah Al-An'am, this study concludes that the use of local culture in Tafsir Al-Azhar can be observed through several aspects. Firstly, linguistic aspects such as the use of local language are evident. Secondly, literary aspects such as the use of Pantun (poems), proverbs, poetry, and mantras in interpretation contribute significantly. Thirdly, socio-cultural aspects also play a role in shaping Buya Hamka's interpretations. These dimensions illustrate how Buya Hamka's exegesis integrates local cultural elements, enriching his interpretations of the Quranic text.
